Kokorozashi Seminar: Wisdom from Māori, Métis, and Japanese Cultures: Uniting Spirit, Mind, and Body in Business Leadership

Monday, November 18, 2024 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM (Pacific Standard Time)
Details:
Feeling the weight of business life, interested in global cultures, or seeking ways to harmonize your body and soul? Join us for this transformative event.

In today’s fast-paced world, business life can be overwhelming. Constant connectivity through devices, competitive pressures, and complex human relationships often leave us stressed and drained. If you’re looking for inspiration and guidance to restore balance in your life, this special Kokorozashi Seminar is for you.

We are honored to welcome two extraordinary speakers who will share the ancestral wisdom from their respective cultures and how they’ve adapted these teachings for modern leadership:

  • Professor Chellie Spiller, a Māori scholar and Professor of Leadership at the University of Waikato Management School, Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Ms. Christina Manchulenko, a Métis performance artist, educator, and somatic therapist from Winnipeg, Canada.

Both Professor Spiller and Ms. Manchulenko will offer insights into the rich heritage of Māori and Métis leadership traditions, revealing how these time-honored principles can help us navigate today’s demanding business landscape.

Following their presentations, Tomoya Nakamura, Professor of GLOBIS University and a practitioner of Japanese martial arts, will moderate a thought-provoking discussion. The dialogue will explore key themes such as:

  • Connection to the land and sea: How indigenous cultures foster deep connections with the natural world.
  • Challenges in modern business: Why do so many individuals struggle with mental health issues and burnout? What drives the growing divide between the rich and the poor?
  • Restoring balance: How Māori leadership principles, like Wayfinding Leadership, and Métis approaches to Holistic Leadership can guide us toward balance and well-being.
  • The unification of body, mind, and spirit: What can we achieve when these three elements are aligned?

This seminar is part of Nakamura’s ongoing exploration of sustainable leadership, inspired by the teachings of Professor Peter Senge of MIT during a previous Kokorozashi Seminar. Professor Senge emphasized the importance of examining civilizations with over 2,000 years of history to truly understand sustainability. The Māori, Métis, and Japanese cultures offer rich legacies in this regard, and through this event, we hope to uncover essential insights for building a more sustainable future.
